Sociomicrobiology and the evolution of kin discrimination : learnings from Myxococcus xanthus

Résumé : The capacity to distinguish self from non-self, or kin from non-kin, critically determines if and how cooperative behavior evolves across the biological spectrum, from complex vertebrates to microbes. Kin discrimination favors high genetic relatedness amongst interacting individuals and can exclude “cheaters”, or non-cooperative organisms that exploit cooperative individuals and take advantage of public goods. However, despite the fundamental importance of such kin discrimination for social evolution, its evolutionary and molecular origins remain obscure. We use a lab experimental evolution system with Myxococcus xanthus as a model organism to understand the evolutionary origins of kin discrimination. It has been previously observed that M. xanthus genotypes cooperate well with clonemates but often display a high degree of social incompatibility with distinct natural genotypes, even among very similar strains. We used swarming incompatibilities in agar medium as a phenotypic read out to explore de novo evolution of kin discrimination. We screened the evolved lines by comparing swarming incompatibilities with ancestor and showed that most evolved clones are no longer able to merge freely with their ancestor. In addition,we describe two different patterns by which de novo kin discrimination might evolve. Future work will characterize the molecular basis of kin discrimination by combining whole-genome sequencing of incompatible clones derived from the same ancestor We will also quantitatively and mechanistically compare lab-evolved kin discrimination with natural instances of kin discrimination present among a large collection of soil isolates, including among very similar strains that diverged recently in sympatry.
